OTP's and Music (-or- Fandom on the Brain)
First off, I have to apologize that this post doesn't contain any actual music files. Since I mostly buy from iTunes, a great many of my MP3s are actually protected music files that resist being uploaded. *sigh*

Anyway, I was sort of spacing out in Physical Anthropology the other day, when I started thinking about my OTPs and their theme songs, or lack there of. I know a lot of people have OTP playlists or whatever-- this is just a list of three or four that apply to my top favorite pairings.

So.

Meredith's Semi-Coherent List Of OTP Theme Songs:
+Jack/Daniel [Stargate SG-1]

  • "Run Around" by Blues Traveler
I once downloaded a music video someone made for J/D using this pairing, and the juxtaposition of scenes and lyrics was just perfect. Also: "When I saw through the voice of a trusted friend that you humor me and tell me lies"? That's Season Five, in a nutshell.
  • "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies
"How can I help it if I think you're funny when you're mad? Trying hard not to smile though I feel bad." Some of the best J/D snark, right there. Also, Daniel's frustrated plant-dance in "One False Step".

+Spike/Xander [BtVS]

  • "Not An Addict" by K's Choice
... I don't really have a theme for this pairing, but I do tend to play this song when I write S/X fic. It just feels right to me.

+Lily/Narcissa [Harry Potter]

  • "Just The Girl" by Click Five
"She's cold and she's cruel, but she knows what she's doing/ knows just what to say so much whole day is ruined". In my mind, this pairing is part passion, part affection, and a hell of a lot of antagonism. We'll just ignore the fact that this song could also sum up my entire adolescence.
  • "Which To Bury, Us Or The Hatchet?" by Relient K
    "I think you know what I'm getting at./ I find it so upsetting that/ the memories that you select/ you keep the bad but the good you just forget." Driving home the point that you can love someone and not necessarily like them. X_x;;
  • "Drops of Jupiter" by Train
This song is about Lily. I'm sorry, it just is. The whole damn thing.
  • "Those That You Love" by Relient K
"The way that girl can break a heart/ it's like a work of art." "She's so confident that she's what everybody wants/ but nobody wants her to know that." More Narcissa, because-- if she were to have a bitching contest with Cordelia, I'm really not sure who'd win.

+Harry/Severus [Harry Potter]

  • "Mr. Brightside"-- by The Killers
... I have no explanation for this, except that I find it the song title humorous in relation to Severus. Also: "How did it end up like this?/ It was only a kiss. It was only a kiss."

+Clark/Lex [Smallville]

  • "Tomorrow" by SR71
I have a love/hate relationship with the Smallville soundtrack, because a lot of times the music is just stupid pop trash *ahem* not my taste, but this is one place where I just have to bow to their selection. This is Lex's song-- "I'm not afraid of tomorrow/ I'm only scared of myself/ feels like my insides are on fire/ and I'm looking through the eyes of someone else." Because without Clark, Lex is a crazy person without the breaks on.
  • "Razorblades and Band-Aids"-- by Ecoline Crush
I find it intensely disturbing that this song doubles in my Anakin/Padme category. But it's perfect for "strong, vibrant love that totally screwed over the world". Or galaxy, in A/P's case. "Did you think this would be easy, my friend?/ Did you you think it'd come to this, our bitter end?/ Kill the magic, suck the life out/ Follow me down, to this our bitter end." Yeah. Happy song. ^^
  • "Existentialism on Prom Night" by Straylight Run
"There are moments when, I know it ends/ and the world revolves around us/ and we're keeping it, keep it all going/ this delicate balance-- vulnerable, all knowing./ Sing like you think no one's listening/ you would kill for this, just a little bit." 'Nough said. This is all Amber's fault. ^_~
  • "Watch the Sky" by Something Corporate
    Amber says this is a Shawn/Kyle song. She's right, but it's also a Clex song. "You live the life you're given with the storms outside/ some days all I do is watch the sky." Maybe it's just an alien slash pairing song. X_x;;

+Padme/Anakin [StarWars]

  • "Eye Conqueror" by Third Eye Blind
"Oceans of love/ I've crossed them for you/ In the matrix of your garden/ I beg your pardon/ now that I'm hardened/ no one's gonna get around me". Heh-- this was my A/P song even before the second movie came out. Did I nail it, or what? ^_~
  • "Razorblades and Band-Aids"-- by Ecoline Crush
    "Did you think this would be easy, my friend?/ Did you you think it'd come to this, our bitter end?/ Kill the magic, suck the life out/ Follow me down, to this our bitter end." Because love can kill you-- literally. X_x;;;
  • "Deep Inside of You" by Third Eye Blind
"Friends say I've changed/ I don't listen/ 'cause I live to be deep inside of you. / slide of her dress/ I'm seeing darkness/ I'm so alive, deep inside of you." Anakin, circa AOTC era. Oh yeah.
  • "Ruthless" by Something Corporate
"This is your ghost that stands before me/ razors on her tongue/ body full of oxygen/ won't be the last time she'll ignore me..." Because Vader is so tortured.
  • "Fall From Grace"-- by Stevie Nicks
"I choose to be his confidant and to keep him from the fire/ I choose to be quietly discreet, if that is his desire." From the "Trouble in Shangrila" album, so it's doubly appropriate. The last line is, "Did I come all the way here just to watch you walk out that door?" ROTS in lyric form!

Well, I guess this is what happens when I quiet up for a while-- huge fandom post. Anyone care to agree on my choices? Violently disagree? Wonder what the hell I'm smoking? ^_~

"When I saw through the voice of a trusted friend that you humor me and tell me lies"
Ouch.
...at least he has Mitchell now?

Maybe it's just an alien slash pairing song.
Hee. :D
Somewhat related: Have you seen Saved!? It's a cute movie, and Chad Faust is simply awesome in his small role.

*smiles* Mitchell, and the couch, and the key hidden under the mat.
Darn you, don't make me drabble again. ^_~

Somewhat related: Have you seen Saved!?
No, I have not. What's it about?
Amber: mitchellminttown1 on April 25th, 2006 06:46 pm (UTC)
Exactly. And the cute way that Mitchell is scared of Daniel's bedroom because he has all that scary crap all over the walls...
*would totally not be opposed to your drabbling again* ;)

Saved! is a weird little comedy set at a Christian high school. An IMDb description:
Mary (Jena Malone) is a good Christian girl who goes to a good Christian high school where she has good Christian friends, mainly Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore), and a perfect Christian boyfriend, Dean (Chad Faust). Her life seems perfect, until the day that she finds out that Dean may be gay. After "seeing" a vision of Jesus in a pool, she does everything in her power to help him turn straight, including offering up her virginity. But none of it helps because Dean's caught and sent to a "degayification" center and Mary ends up pregnant. It's during her time of need that she becomes real friends with the school's set of "misfits," including Cassandra (Eva Amurri), the school's only Jewish girl; Roland (Macaulay Culkin), Hilary Faye's wheelchair-bound brother, and Patrick (Patrick Fugit), the skateboarder son of the school's principal, Pastor Skip (Martin Donovan); whilst Hilary Faye turns her into a social outcast.
I really liked it. It was hilarious and heartbreaking and touching and thoughtful in turns. :)

Don't mean to cut in, but just thought I'd say that was a GREAT movie-especially the part where she hurls the bible at Mary's head while screaming "I am filled with the love of Christ!" As she said-at turns both humorous and deeply insightful.
Amber: religionminttown1 on May 8th, 2006 03:17 am (UTC)
That is such a great moment, especially because Mary picks up the Bible, turns around, and says, "This is not supposed to be a weapon!"

*tries to speak whilst giggling helplessly* Sweet mercy, that sounds hilarious! I'll definitely check it out. The flinging of the Bible is spot-on for some people I've known. ^_~;;; Thanks for the great rec, Amber and shiegra!

Your HP pairings continue to terrify me! :P *snuggles Sirius and Remus*
Meredith Bronwen Mallory: lilyevansgarnettrees on April 24th, 2006 06:01 pm (UTC)
*grins* All your fault.

... the only Sirius/Remus song I can think of is "What Do I Get" by the Buzzcocks. ^^
Amber: harry potterminttown1 on April 25th, 2006 06:48 pm (UTC)
But what about "Waxing or Waning" and "I Wish I Was the Moon Tonight" and "Swing Life Away" and "There's No 'I' in Team"???

...just kidding. I have a weird view (and accompanying playlist!) for every pairing I like.
ctourofduty on May 2nd, 2006 06:08 pm (UTC)
I always feel so awkward and, well, like a weird when I contact someone but... in your case, I had to. If only to let you know that the stories you write in the M*A*S*H and Band of Brothers fandoms are nothing short of genius. I'm probably just telling you things you've heard a thousand times before--or that you SHOULD have heard a thousand times before, given just how amazing these stories are--but I felt like I had to say them anyway.

I'm in love with your writing style, I do believe, because the story telling is so exquisite but you manage to tell a compelling, in depth story without losing any of the details and you never compromise characterization. And, yeah, I think that's all I had to say because I'm trying to keep this as short as possible so I don't look even weirder than I feel.
Meredith Bronwen Mallorygarnettrees on May 7th, 2006 12:20 am (UTC)
Please don't feel weird at all, tourofduty! *blushes* I can'y thank you enough for the kind feedback, especially on my BoB stuff, since that's a fandom I've always felt slightly out of my depth in. I really appreciate your comments, so please don't be embarrassed.
I just can't thank you enough!
